Recent generations have been taught a false history of our country and its Judeo-Christian background with the Magna Carta, the Mayflower Compact, the Declaration of Independence and our Constitution. Is it any wonder our younger generations are being so misled to believe our country is bad?
I liked the real history, backed up by original journal writings or letters and the actual documents of our founders clear back to even Columbus’ period. The Pilgrims were a very colorful group and the stories of the ship called the Mayflower reveals the courage, ingenuity, and determination of a select few who had enough faith in God and each other to make such a miraculous voyage. My maternal grandmother was in the sixth generation of her forefathers who came over on the Mayflower. That began my life-long fascination with the real history of our nation.
I remember studying about the peaceful native tribes as well as some of the renegade and murderous native Americans. It is interesting, too, that the pilgrims and most colonists who came to America in the first few centuries bought land from the “Indians”. Only a handful of settler groups took land by force, and in a few cases it was because the tribe was warlike to everyone including other native Americans. Some tribes fought with the settlers against these common enemies.
The first noted Thanksgiving excited me because we studied the event from primary sources surrounding the feasting and thanks given to God for a meager survival. The peaceful “Indians” who had helped them get started were invited to the feasting and games which lasted many days. The native peaceful groups even brought venison and corn after a few days. Both the settlers and the native people learned from each other their different customs and ways of living.
We do our forefathers and our country a great disservice if we take for granted the powerful hand of God on our nation and its beginnings. Even the “Indians” commented that our God was greater because after the settlers prayed diligently for rain, an unusual soft rain came that blessed their crops rather than destroyed them with the heavy rains the tribes in the area experienced. Hence just one of many reasons for whole tribal groups turning to God and beginning to honor Him with their own thankfulness.
I believe it is time for our nation to return to giving serious thanks to Almighty God this year for His great protection and benevolence towards us. I wonder if we could turn our country around to again have moral, spiritual and logical directions if we just began to thank God every day for His great benefits. Let’s attempt to do so this Thanksgiving.
Have a blessed and grateful Thanksgiving celebration!
